We flew Breeze airlines - great flight and fabulous views of the swamps around New Orleans as we were coming in to land. Sonya arrived from Houston and met us with a hire car at the airport - the support from this family has been much appreciated.
Our accommodation was compact and interesting - close to the city and to Darcy’s college so getting around was easy. Our first dinner was at the legendary Commander’s Palace - a historic award winning restaurant that once again lived up to the hype - the dessert soufflé was well worth the wait.
It did start raining and kept this up for most of the time we were visiting. This did not impact our tour as we had planned inside activities - also good in the humidity. Our first incursion was to the Mardi Gras museum and workshop - a testament to the ingenuity of artists and crafts people - huge statues and floats all being prepared for the n2027 Mardi Gras.
We dined at Clancy’s - another fabulous restaurant - Darcy’s roommate Sue joined us and the food and service was sublime.
The following day we toured the National World War Two museum. What a way to honour and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice - the mapping and hyper visuals made the scale and context of what happened easier to understand. I will only briefly mention my impressive slip on the concrete in the car park - a nice big graze and a bruised ego but nothing broken! I will spare you the visuals.
We ended our visit with the final jazz session at Preservation Hall. What a show - an old music hall in almost original condition. Great music and vibes - I haven’t yet learned how do upload a video to this blog - if that changes Ill insert it here.
Our final morning was spent at the 8am Mass a the the Loyola College Church followed by a great breakfast and a final goodbye to Darcy.
